Is OpenAI working on a browser behind the scenes?

Nobody has really shaken up the consumer browser market since Google released Chrome in 2008. The most popular browser in the world, it's now the go-to software for 65% of internet users.

Could OpenAI have plans to disrupt this market once again? That's what a report from The Information claims.

The gossip

The publication says OpenAI is considering launching a browser of its own that weaves in the widely-used ChatGPT interface.

With many users already asking ChatGPT questions they might otherwise ask Google Search, it seems like a plausible direction for the company.

OpenAI has already introduced a live internet search feature for ChatGPT and — like Google Search — it suggests queries and trending search topics. Responses also come with linked sources, much like Google's Gemini AI, which now loads automatically at the top of Google's search results.

The evidence

The Information says OpenAI has consulted with companies including Redfin, Conde Nast, Priceline and Eventbrite, and that early designs and prototypes for the browser have been created.

Deals for firms to help "power search features for travel, food, real estate and retail websites" are apparently on the cards.

OpenAI has also talked to Samsung about using its AI tech on its devices, the report says.

Beyond a new browser, this could be an even bigger threat to Google, whose Android operating system and many of its apps come pre-loaded on Samsung phones.

But for now, whatever OpenAI's browser and device plans really are is a matter of speculation. The Information says the browser project is in its early stages and not "remotely close" to a launch.

Indie Hackers has asked OpenAI to confirm more details about the project.

The implications

The news couldn't have come at a worse time for Google, which is currently the focus of a competition probe by the U.S. Department of Justice.

DoJ prosecutors argue the company needs to sell off Chrome — and maybe even Android — to break up its "unlawful" monopoly on the search market.

Shares in Google's parent company Alphabet closed about 5% down on Thursday, the day prosecutors filed their claims in court, according to Reuters.

The firm will have the opportunity to make its own proposals next month, ahead of a planned trial in April.
