OpenAI preps launch of o3, its new reasoning model. According to The Information, o3 is the successor to OpenAI's o1 model, and the company jumped from “o1” to “o3” to avoid potential trademark issues with a British telecom called O2. OpenAI's CEO Sam Altman took to X to tease a Friday release of o3, which would make it the final product launch in its holiday-themed "12 Days of Shipmas" event:
haha i wondered if O2 had anything to do with that! Wild.
I wonder if people who just signed up for Pro will get first access? They were told they'd get future updates early after all.
The launch of OpenAI's O3 reasoning model sounds exciting! Advanced reasoning capabilities can open doors to more accurate AI predictions and problem-solving. After this, the race is on (Google, etc.) to make these 'thinking' models as cheap as possible.
I've been testing out the new $200/mo o1 pro mode, and it's excellent. So the thing I'm most curious about is exactly what the business model will be for this new model. I can't imagine they'll release something better than o1 pro mode and keep it free/cheap, otherwise o1 pro mode subscribers will all cancel. On the flip side, I can't imagine they'll release something worse than o1 pro mode on the most hyped day of their 12 days of launches.
So probably it'll be an improved o3, and people paying for o1 pro mode will get an even better o3 pro mode?
impressive
great
