AI has officially taken over LinkedIn. The Dead Internet Theory is here.
Since ChatGPT launched there has been an increase in AI-generated posts on LinkedIn.
In October 2024 more than half of long-form posts on LinkedIn were likely AI-generated.
Post length has also increased since Chat-GPT launched.
LinkedIn might not be everyone’s cup of tea. I know some indie hackers tend to be allergic to its ingenuine corporate vibes. But love it or hate it, it's one of the best places for business connections and landing clients.
Now, here’s where it gets a little dystopian: according to research by Jonathan Gillham from Originality AI, over 50% of LinkedIn’s long-form posts are now AI-generated.
Let’s break it down. Originality AI analyzed 8,795 LinkedIn long-form (100+ words) posts using their AI detector to figure out if they were likely written by humans or AI. They analyzed posts from the last four years.
Unsurprisingly, things exploded when ChatGPT dropped in December 2022. From January to February 2023, AI-written posts jumped by a staggering 189%. Fast forward to October 2024, 54% of long-form posts are now likely written by AI.
And it’s not just the sheer number of posts — length is up too. Since ChatGPT launched, LinkedIn posts have grown 107% longer on average.
It doesn’t stop at posts either. AI’s sneaking into the comments, too. Feels like LinkedIn is becoming SocialAI — where bots are chatting with other bots.
And people aren’t hiding it. Take Ruben Hassid, founder of EasyGen (an AI tool for LinkedIn). He brags about the numbers:
I built it as my personal AI, my own ghostwriter.
In 2 years, I went from 8,000 to 400,000 followers.
His tool alone has 27K users, not to mention competitors like Taplio.
Whether this is a step forward or a creepy slide into the uncanny valley, one thing’s for sure: we’re witnessing the “Dead Internet Theory” unfold in real time.
LI posts were already cringe before so I don't think this is such a "bad" outcome.
It might be the one place where AI comments actually represent a relative improvement in post quality lol
Completely agree with you lol. At least AI is not that cringe and is more professional. xD
In terms of quantity, AI has indeed improved LinkedIn’s publishing speed and overall quality.
Not surprised! More than 50% blog articles are written by AI.
This would also for lack of a better word train people to distinguish between AI and non-AI content. The more you read, the better you become. Soon enough we might be able to notice engagement differences between the two. Not everyone wants to read a mechanical rendition of technical concepts on LinkedIn.
Not surprising. AI does make generating content a lot easier. I wish that people would use it for inspiration and maybe drafts, but then fact-check and edit by hand to make sure that what's published is accurate.
I routinely see AI generated content that are plain false.
If the dead internet theory becomes complete reality, then we can leave social media to the bots, and go back to meeting each other in person. ;-)
The rise of AI-generated content on platforms like LinkedIn, where over 50% of long-form posts are AI-written, mirrors the ongoing trend in digital transformation. Just as AI is reshaping content creation and online interaction, the Philippine government's SIM card registration initiative is a step toward digital regulation and security. Much like how LinkedIn has evolved with AI tools helping users automate engagement, SIM registration ensures that mobile interactions are traceable, reducing fraud and boosting security.
It's really helpful.
Linkedin encourages AI written content. In its post placeholder, the text is "Start a post, try writing with AI". So it is unlikely that they will take any step to reduce it or incentivize originality. Maybe, their primary goal is still to get more people to interact on the platform. So, theoretically, they will just want to have better content that people read and engage with, AI-generated or not.
Btw, just checked your Kickstart Side Hustle. Really cool.
Will use some of your principles to my video translation product videodubber.ai
Thanks! It's helpful.
The problem is not only Linkedin, but the solution is always the same: be original, write your posts with your own identity
*inserts side glance monkey meme
I only use LinkedIn to update my profile, but I end up looking at most of these 'how to improve' posts. Sooner, I assumed most of them were AI-written and one of my co-workers did it too.
Love it. I'm always looking for new excuses to continue dismissing LinkedIn as a marketing channel 🤣
Yes, many people now use AI-generated photos in their posts. LinkedIn could consider integrating AI-powered image generating into its platform.
